What if you do not make a poster, play a campaign video or hand out a flyer, but let a whole part of the city respond live? In 2015, Valo experienced exactly that during ZieZuid, a Rotterdam campaign that became an important moment in our development.

Ten years of Valo
Valo was not always the specialist in online events, livestreams and hybrid communication that it is today. We started from video production: filming stories, putting people on screen, editing and delivering productions.
In 2015 we felt how powerful live video could be when it connects people in the moment. ZieZuid, a campaign for Rotterdam South, was one of the projects that made this clear.
Not a film about South, but live contact with South
The idea was simple and strong: let people in Rotterdam look at Rotterdam South differently. Next to the Markthal stood a giant pair of glasses, about ten by seven metres. In the lenses were two large screens with a live video connection to Rotterdam South.
Passers-by in the city centre could look through the glasses and speak live with people on the other side. The installation was playful, visible and very Rotterdam.
A turning point
Today, a live video connection feels normal. In 2015, it was still pioneering. For us, the project showed that live video is not only a technical tool. It can create curiosity, conversation and connection between people who are not in the same place.
The lesson we still use
ZieZuid helped shape the way we think about livestreams and hybrid events. The strongest live moments are not just broadcasts. They create contact. They make people respond, participate and feel part of something happening now.
That idea still guides Valo: use technology to bring people, stories and moments closer together.
