When people talk about live video, terms such as livestream, webcast, webinar and web conference are often used interchangeably. They are related, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

What is a livestream?
A livestream is a live video and audio broadcast over the internet. It is the technical basis for many formats. A livestream can be public or private, simple or highly produced.
Live or semi-live
A true livestream happens in real time. Semi-live means the video was recorded earlier and broadcast at a fixed time. Semi-live can be useful, but it does not allow the same direct interaction as a live broadcast.
What is a webinar?
A webinar is usually an online knowledge session with interaction. Viewers can ask questions, respond through chat or take part in polls. Webinars are often used for education, marketing and professional communities.
What is a webcast?
A webcast is typically a broadcast to a larger audience. It can be a conference, presentation, award show or formal meeting. Interaction is possible, but the focus is often on reach and production quality.
What is a web conference?
A web conference is more meeting-oriented. Participants often see and hear each other and can collaborate directly. It is usually less like a broadcast and more like a digital meeting room.
Which format should you choose?
Choose the format based on your goal, audience size, interaction needs and desired production value. Valo helps organisations translate those choices into a practical event setup.
