Interaction is one of the biggest challenges in online events. Viewers are easily distracted, especially when they only have to watch. The solution is not to add random tools, but to design moments where the audience has a real role.

1. Start with a question
Open the event with a simple question or poll. It gives viewers a reason to participate immediately and gives the host useful input for the rest of the programme.
2. Use moderated Q&A
A good Q&A is more than an open chat. Let a moderator select, combine and sharpen questions so the speaker can answer them clearly.
3. Add polls at key moments
Polls work best when the outcome influences the conversation. Use them to test assumptions, choose examples or make differences in the audience visible.
4. Make room for chat
Chat can create energy, but it needs guidance. Ask specific questions and have someone respond, collect themes and bring useful comments back into the programme.
5. Use quizzes or challenges
A quiz can add pace and playfulness, especially for internal events, training sessions and community meetings.
6. Bring viewers on screen
For smaller events, invite selected online participants to join the conversation live. This makes the event feel more human and less one-directional.
7. Create short networking moments
Breakouts or guided networking can work well when the purpose is clear. Keep the groups small and provide a question or assignment.
8. Follow up after the event
Interaction does not end when the stream stops. Use recordings, highlights, answers to unanswered questions and follow-up content to keep the audience involved.
